The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is considered one of the most interesting adventure programs in the world, because of its great variety of landscapes and ecological biodiversity and also for the impressive Inca monuments visited during the trek.

The route runs through an impressive variety of altitudes, where the climate and ecosystems range from the high Andean plain to the cloud forest. Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 4 Days Itinerary

 Day 01: Cusco: Beginning of the Inca trail KM 82 – Huayllabamba

We will leave early from Cusco by bus and drive to Km 82, the starting point for the Inca Trail. Here we´ll meet the porters and cooks who will take all the necessary equipment for the trip. We will begin the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (Machu Pichu) crossing the Piscacucho bridge, then climbing to Patallaqta, where we will have lunch. We continue our journey crossing the Valley of Huayllabamba until we reach our campsite, where we will have a pleasant dinner.

Day 02: Inca trail Huayllabamba – Pacaymayu

Early breakfast. Our trek takes us up to Warmihuañusca at 4,200 m.a.s.l., where we will have a panoramic view of the mountains and high snowy peaks surrounding us.
We will descend to our next campsite, Pacaymayu where we will have dinner and overnight.

Day 03: Inka trail Pacaymayu – Wiñaywayna

Early breakfast, then we will begin trekking, ascending toward Runcuracay, an archaeological site at 3,700 m.a.s.l. Then we will continue toward Sayacmarka, another archaeological area, where we will have lunch. After lunch, we will continue to Puyupatamarca (in Quechua, City above the clouds), an impressive Inca City. Finally, we will reach Wiñaywayna at 2,690 m.a.s.l where we will have dinner and overnight.

  • Approximate Walking Time:7-8 hours / Descent: 700 m

 

Day 04: Wiñaywayna – Machu Picchu.

After breakfast, we continue hiking until we reach Inti Punku or the Sun Gate, the entrance to the wonderful Machupicchu citadel. Here, we will have a guided tour of this impressive site. After our tour we’ll take the bus down to the small town of Aguas Calientes, then after lunch (not included), we will take the train back to Cusco.

  • Distance Travelled:8 Km approx plus exploration of Machu Picchu
  • Approximate Walking Time:6-7 hours / Descent: 300 m

 

You should bring: 

  • A backpack with a change of clothes for the whole period of the trek.
  • Rain gear (jacket and pants if available) or rain poncho (plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco).
  • Strong footwear, waterproof trekking boots recommended.
  • Sandals or jogging shoes to use around the camp.
  • Warm clothes, including jacket, fleece. Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping.
  • Sleeping bag (please inform our Reservations Department if you wish to book this extra service at the moment of your booking).
  • Sleeping pad: will be provided by us but is to be carried by you.
  • Flashlight/headlamp and batteries.
  • Camera and batteries (batteries drain more quickly under cold conditions).
  • Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain, and cold.
  • Sunblock.
  • After-sun cream or hydrating cream for face and body.
  • Insect repellent – minimum recommended 20% DEET – no malaria risk has been reported.
  • Handkerchiefs.
  • Toilet paper.
  • Snacks: eg biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, raw fruits, muesli, etc. Please note that we do provide a daily morning snack and our meal service is very complete and well supplied. But feel free to bring your favourite snack if you wish.
  • Water container and water for the first morning. Important notice: plastic water bottles are no longer allowed into the Inca Trail. Plastic water containers (ie. Nalgene) or metal ones are recommended.
  • Optionally: water- sterilizing tablets in case you pick up water from streams or rivers along the route. Otherwise, we provide filtered boiled water, which is safe to drink.
  • Small towel.
  • Swimsuit (if you wish to go to the hot springs in Aguas Calientes).
  • Cash in soles and/or US$ for your own expenses.
  • Original passport is mandatory to enter the Inca Trail.
  • Original International Student Identity Card (in case you have applied for a student discount).
  • Optional: walking sticks or poles (rubber covers required in order not to damage the Inka trail.

 

Important:

  • Before booking, please first check availability with the reservations team at Peru Agency. Once we have confirmed that spaces are available for the required date, you must send us the following information for each passenger: full name, ID and/or passport number, nationality, sex, and age. Please also send a copy of your passport showing this same information. If you do not have this document, we cannot proceed with the reservation.
  • In addition to the above, we must receive payment in full order to confirm the booking.
  • Peru Agency cannot reserve or confirm only entry to the Inca Trail. Our services must be booked as a package and will include the services as detailed in each itinerary.
  • Departures every day minimum of 2 people, including extra porter to carry your belongings.
  • Price per person based on double occupancy in shared service.  Ask us for a private service quote.
  • Extra porter can be booked on request. The price is  $174.
  • All Inca Trail departures dates are subject to space availability given by the Culture Ministry (Only allowed 500 people per day including guides, cooks, porters, and travellers).
  • Extra Services for additional cost: walking poles, Inflatable sleeping pads for extra comfort, sleeping bags, upgrade your train (return only), Entrance ticket to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountains.
  • Group Departures every day.
  • Inca Trail is closed in February for maintenance.

Terms and Conditions for Inca Trail Policies

According to the Resolution #002-2004-UGM-CD, published in official newspaper El Peruano on Nov 12, 2004, modifying chapter III of the Inca Trail Regulation, which refers to Inca Trail space bookings. Bookings will be guaranteed by the government institutions when providing full names; nationalities and passport numbers of passengers; and when having paid the full amount of passengers and staff (cook and team of porters) entrance fees. (NON REFUNDABLE)

  1. The booking has been first confirmed by our Reservation Department by e-mail, this meaning that spaces are available on the Inca Trail for the requested date at the moment of the booking.
  2. The full passenger data have been provided and the required deposit has been paid for. (NON-REFUNDABLE, NO CHANGES PERMITTED ON NAMES, DATES, ETC)

**Since the Inca Trail has a maximum allowance of 500 people per day (including passengers and agency staff), we strongly recommend making your bookings, as much in advance as possible to make sure you will find spaces on the desired departure date. We are already receiving bookings for departures scheduled as far as one year prior to the trek departure date, so if you wish to travel with us to the Inca Trail, please make sure to confirm your booking as soon as possible. Otherwise, we have also available alternative routes of equally awesome beauty and interest to offer to you.

**VERY IMPORTANT: The following client information is mandatory for any Inca Trail booking:

  1. Complete names and surnames
  2. Nationality
  3. Copy of Passport
  4. Date of Birth
  5. Gender

The exact information provided by you will be submitted to the governmental institution in charge of regulating the access to the Inca Trail and will be included in the official permit to enter the Inca Trail on the requested date. Should there be any change in the above-mentioned data (ie. New passport number), we kindly request you to inform us via email as soon as possible. The government reserves the right not to allow entry to any visitor whose data are not the exact ones as those in the official permit. PERU AGENCY excludes any responsibility for no entry in case the passenger information has changed without prior notice to us.
