An Unforgettable Cultural Exchange

Published: March 13, 2024

On March 13, 2024, a group of students from Hyde Park Schools Texas, Austin, United States, visited the educational institution IE Jesús Alberto Rodríguez Figueroa, located in Ccotohuincho, Urubamba, Peru. This intercultural encounter, framed within a sustainable tourism approach, allowed students from both schools to share experiences, strengthen bonds of friendship, and learn about the cultures and traditions of each country.

The Warm Welcome

Around 11:00 a.m., the students from the Peruvian school received the visitors with a warm welcome. Each one presented them with a flower as a symbol of friendship and led them to the central courtyard, where the principal, teachers, and parents were with their children.

Welcoming Words and Cultural Presentations

The principal of the Peruvian school, after the welcoming remarks, gave way to a Huaylas dance presentation by four students. Later, the sponsorship ceremony took place, in which each American student sponsored a Peruvian student. The sponsors presented a gift consisting of two notebooks and a box of crayons, while the godchildren gave them souvenirs made by themselves, such as keychains and bracelets.

Exchange of Experiences and Gift Giving

The athletic director of the Texas student group also addressed a few words, followed by the presentation of gifts for the Peruvian school, which included school supplies and soccer and American football balls. This gesture of generosity was received with great joy by the educational community.

United by Sports

To conclude the visit, all the students, together with their teachers and some parents, went to the soccer field to share a moment of recreation and sport. Joy and camaraderie were the protagonists of this encounter, where the connection that had been created between both cultures was evident.

Farewell and Gratitude

After an emotional sporting exchange, it was time to say goodbye. The students said goodbye with hugs and words of affection, with the hope of meeting again in the future.

Final Reflection

This cultural exchange between Hyde Park Schools Texas and IE Jesús Alberto Rodríguez Figueroa was an enriching experience for all participants. The students not only had the opportunity to learn about a new culture and practice a foreign language, but they also learned about the importance of friendship, solidarity, and respect for differences.

Sustainable Tourism in Action

This intercultural encounter was carried out under a sustainable tourism approach, prioritizing respect for the environment, the local community, and the local economy. Some of the actions that were implemented were:

  • Responsible Transportation: Fuel-efficient transportation was used for student transfers.
  • Responsible Consumption: The use of single-use materials was minimized and the consumption of local products was prioritized.
  • Support for the Local Economy: Local services were hired for the organization of the event, such as catering and transportation.
  • Respectful Cultural Exchange: Respect for the cultures and traditions of each country was promoted.

These types of initiatives are fundamental to promote responsible and sustainable tourism that benefits local communities, preserves the environment, and generates positive experiences for visitors.

Conclusion

The cultural exchange experience between Hyde Park Schools Texas and IE Jesús Alberto Rodríguez Figueroa is an example of how sustainable tourism can generate a positive impact on communities and strengthen bonds of friendship between different cultures.
