We begin our journey at the iconic Uyuni Clock Tower, a historical piece imported from the Oscar & Meyer House in Hamburg and assembled by local resident Miguel Vargas, who set its machinery in motion on April 20, 1930.
Next, we will visit the fascinating Train Cemetery, where antique wagons and steam locomotives—witnesses to Bolivia’s first railway line (1890) connecting Uyuni with Antofagasta—rest after more than half a century of abandonment. We then continue to the community of Colchani, 20 km from the city, to get a firsthand look at its artisanal salt processing workshop.
Finally, we venture into the majestic Uyuni Salt Flat (formerly known as the Thunupa Salt Flat). In this vast expanse of 10,582 km², we will observe traditional salt harvesting, the historic “Playa Blanca” salt hotel, and the Dakar Monument. Once in the heart of the salt flat, we will enjoy the classic perspective photography session and explore Incahuasi Island (“House of the Inca”), famous for its giant cacti that exceed 10 meters in height. We will conclude the day with a strategic stop to watch the sunset, accompanied by a toast with traditional Andean liqueurs.
Breakfast at the hotel.
We begin the day at the Chiguana Salt Flat (3,650 m a.s.l.), a vast 415 km² plain that serves as the gateway to the Ollagüe Volcano Lookout. From there, we will observe the activity of this 5,868-meter giant located on the border with Chile; its two fumaroles—one at the summit and the main one 700 meters west of the crater—are clearly visible from this vantage point.
The journey continues along the High Andean Jewels Route toward Laguna Cañapa, a 1.42 km² saltwater mirror inhabited by elegant Andean flamingos. Afterward, we will visit Laguna Hedionda, famous for its high sulfur concentration and characteristic aroma, which makes it the preferred sanctuary for the James’s flamingo. After passing the Charcota and Honda lagoons, we enter the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve to explore the Siloli Desert. In this horizon of red sands, the plain is interrupted by strange volcanic formations, most notably the famous Stone Tree (Árbol de Piedra): a 5-meter “rock mushroom” patiently shaped by wind erosion.
Finally, we arrive at the spectacular Laguna Colorada (54 km²). In this unique ecosystem, thousands of Andean, Chilean, and James’s flamingos gather over crimson-red waters—a coloration resulting from a rich mixture of minerals, sediments, and specialized algae pigments. Thus concludes our day in the heart of the Altiplano.
Breakfast at the hotel.
We begin the day very early, heading to the Sol de Mañana Geysers, a setting of intense volcanic activity where boiling lava craters coexist with imposing fumaroles that launch steam columns between 10 and 50 meters high. Following this experience, we will cross the Chalviri Salt Flat to reach the Polques Hot Springs, where we can enjoy a rejuvenating soak in natural pools at a temperature of 35°C.
The journey continues toward the Salvador Dalí Desert (also known as Pampa Jara), famous for its isolated rock formations that appear to be taken from a surrealist painting. Finally, we arrive at Laguna Verde (Green Lagoon), whose emerald hue arises from its unique mineral composition of magnesium, arsenic, and calcium carbonate. Standing majestically before it is the Licancabur Volcano (5,914 m a.s.l.), one of the highest active volcanoes on the planet.
On our return to Uyuni, we will make strategic stops at the Valley of Rocks and visit the historic church in the community of San Cristóbal. Arrival and transfer to the bus station.
