We begin our journey with a visit to the iconic Uyuni Clock Tower, imported from the Oscar & Meyer House in Hamburg, Germany. It was assembled by local resident Miguel Vargas, who set it in motion on April 20, 1930.
We then continue to the Train Cemetery, home to antique steam locomotives and wagons abandoned for over half a century. Some of these date back to the 1890s, the era when Bolivia’s first railway line—connecting Uyuni to Antofagasta—was inaugurated.
Next, we head to the community of Colchani, located 20 km from Uyuni, to visit an artisanal salt processing workshop. Afterward, we enter the majestic Uyuni Salt Flat (formerly known as the Thunupa Salt Flat), which spans approximately 10,582 km².
During the tour, you will observe the traditional salt harvesting process (salt mounds), visit the first salt hotel, “Playa Blanca,” and see the Dakar Monument. As we venture deeper into the flats, we will have a creative “perspective photography” session. We will also visit the Salt Blocks sector to admire salt sculptures, such as the Stairway to Heaven and the Hand of God, among other local artisanal creations.
On the horizon, the imposing Thunupa Volcano provides the perfect backdrop to enjoy a sunset at its feet. In the heart of this magnificent salt desert, we will conclude the day with a toast featuring traditional Andean liqueurs.
Night in the Desert.
reakfast at the hotel.
We begin the day at the Chiguana Salt Flat (3,650 m a.s.l.), a vast expanse of 415 km² that leads us toward the Ollagüe Volcano Lookout. From this vantage point, we will observe the activity of this 5,868-meter giant situated on the Chilean border. You can clearly distinguish its two fumaroles: one at the summit and the primary one located 700 meters west of the crater.
The journey continues along the High Andean Jewels Route, starting with Laguna Cañapa, where Andean flamingos inhabit its saline waters. Next, we visit Laguna Hedionda, famous for its characteristic sulfur aroma and for being the preferred sanctuary of the James’s flamingo. After passing Laguna Charcota and Laguna Honda, we enter the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve to explore the Siloli Desert.
In this horizon of red sands, the Stone Tree (Árbol de Piedra) stands out—a 5-meter-high geomorphological formation sculpted by wind erosion.
Finally, we arrive at the spectacular Laguna Colorada (54 km²). Here, thousands of Andean, Chilean, and James’s flamingos gather across waters tinged with crimson red, a phenomenon caused by mineral sediments and specialized algae. Following this natural spectacle, we begin our return to Uyuni to conclude the day.
